IELTS & Australian Immigration

As part of your skilled migration application you may be required to present evidence of your English language ability.

English level requirements for each visa category are set by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
IELTS is accepted throughout Australia for this purpose and is also trusted by organisations around the world as an accurate, reliable and fair measure of English language proficiency. IELTS results are accepted for study, work and migration purposes in many countries.

There are two versions of the test - IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic.

  • IELTS General Training is often a visa requirement if you plan to migrate to Australia. The General Training version of the test is also typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries to do secondary education, work experience or training programs.
  • IELTS Academic is, broadly speaking, for those who want to study or train in a university that teaches in English at undergraduate or postgraduate level, or institutions of higher and further education.
Both versions of the test consist of four parts, covering each of the four language skills:
  • Listening;
  • Reading;
  • Writing; and
  • Speaking.
During the test the Listening, Reading and Writing components are taken together. The Speaking test is a separate 11-14 minute test and is taken one-on-one with an examiner. This means you are given a private room to take your test with no interruptions of distractions from other test takers.

IELTS results are issued 13 days after you sit the test. You can select which organisations you would like to receive your results at the time of booking your test.

IELTS results are reported on a nine-band scale which identifies proficiency level, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

Register for the test
There are over 200 test locations worldwide and the test is available on 48 dates per year. Whether you take the test in your home country or in Australia the test is the same level of difficulty and is marked using the same assessment criteria all over the world.
